This past weekend our Louisiana Chapter held its Annual Cast & Blast. Led by Program Director Michael Rivers, it was a great opportunity to provide a segway into our fall programs at this chapter. We had a great group of mentors and boys attend the program as we shared and spent time in God’s Word and Creation and were blessed during our time. Friday evening all the young men arrived at the Louisiana Camp as we shared dinner prepared by Mandy Rivers. After enjoying a great dinner we got the camp fire ready and spent time around the fire talking between boys and mentors on what all God has been doing in their life since the last time we were together. We were blessed to have Waylon Mills to share in a Word and lead us in acoustic worship before breaking for the night. The boys enjoyed some free time of fellowship playing hide and seek in the dark and just hanging out with the mentors around the fire before hitting the bed.
Saturday morning we were treated to Chick Fil A biscuits before getting the day under way. Program Director Michael Rivers led hunter and gun safety overview before kicking things off. Shortly after finishing up the safety overview we headed to the station area where stations were setup for canoeing, fishing, archery, clay shooting, and rifle range. Each mentor was assigned a station to teach and engage the boys in each area. Each young man got the opportunity to qualify for the fall deer hunts on the rifle range where more detailed and individual instruction was provided by Michael Rivers. The young men learned and proved to be very skilled in each of the stations they participated in. After spending the majority of the morning at these activities we took a break and headed in for lunch and a midday devotional. Mandy Rivers once again outdid herself with some meatball subs for lunch! We were blessed to have Mentor and Pastor Michael Thomas from Isabel Baptist Church on hand to lead a devotional on knowing God. After our break we headed back over to the stations for our 6-3-1 Sharp Shooter Challenge. All the young men started at the archery station and the six closest to the bulls-eye advance to the skeet station. At the skeet station the top three shooters advanced to the rifle range. Finally at the Rifle Range the top three competed for Sharp Shooter recognition overall. All the young men did very well but it was CJ Wilson who took the over all Sharp Shooter Recognition this year! We rounded out the day with a little more time on the station before returning home.
This was another great program in God’s Creation. We are truly blessed with a great group of boys and mentors. Please continue to keep these programs for fatherless boys in your prayers and for God to use them to reach, inspire, support, and engage these young men. We are always looking for opportunities where God will open doors for these programs in other communities and expand their reach in the communities we are currently serving.
