This past weekend our 15 and under Georgia boys took advantage of the Georgia Deer Season Youth Opener, led by Program Director Don Brooks. As we always do we kicked things off Friday evening at the Dallas, GA Camp. Once everyone arrived we had a feast of lasagna, salad, garlic bread, apple pie and ice cream, prepared and served by Carrie Davis and Leslie Brooks. After dinner we gathered to listen to Founder, Jeff Davis, share what God had laid on his heart. He reminded us of the devotions and discussions we have had so far this year. Jeff talked about all the things we do together as brothers in Truth in Nature, but the most important is when we open the word of God, talk and share with one another about life, our need for a Savior, praying for and introducing our brothers to salvation in Christ and being there for one another. As he closed in prayer, he invited anyone who wanted to talk further about accepting Christ to step outside where Don was waiting. The sound of the door opening and closing that night was the best sound of the weekend, as Malachi stepped out in faith and Don led him to the Lord. We are so blessed to experience these moments. This is the whole reason why we do what we do. We are so proud of Malachi for listening to God speak to his heart. He is now truly our brother.
Saturday morning the 4:30am wake up call came quick. We grabbed coffee and sausage biscuits as we loaded up and headed to Walker Creek Outdoors, where Shannon Morgan, Danny and team had a great setup waiting for us. Mentors and boys in their deer stands before sunrise, the wait began. Several deer were seen, but there were no good shots to be had. We broke for lunch and some down time and then back to the woods for the afternoon hunt. It just didn’t seem to be the day, until dusk began to fall and a shot rang out. Youth, Chandler Shelnut made a great shot and came away with his very first deer ever! A big thanks to mentor Josh Singh for spending the day with Chandler and sharing this experience with him. The deer will be processed and the meat then given to Chandler’s family to enjoy, also instilling a sense of accomplishment and confidence in Chandler for providing for his family.
We thank God for the beautiful weather, the chance to enjoy the outdoors, the deer He provided for food on the table, the time we had to bond with our boys and walk with them through life. And we thank Him most of all this weekend for the new life and new brother He has given us in Christ. Welcome to the family Malachi! We ask that you continue to pray, consider partnering, mentoring, or involving in a young one of our programs in one of our current coalitions. Join us as we Reach, Inspire, Support, and Engage these young men from single parent and fatherless homes. You can check out all the pictures using the link below.
